NZ losing glaciers at record speeds

From Morning Report, 7:56 am on 29 April 2021

New Zealand is losing its glaciers at record speeds. New international research finds glaciers here are thinning seven times faster now than 20 years ago.

The new research uses analysis of satellite and aerial images of more than 200,000 glaciers around the world.

The research team estimates that these frozen giants lost on average a total of 267 gigatonnes of mass per year, accounting for 21 percent of observed sea-level rise.

Dr Lauren Vargo a research fellow at the Antarctic Research Centre has read the research.

She spoke to Susie Ferguson.
