Motelier on emergency housing troubles

From Morning Report, 6:42 am on 29 April 2021

A Waikato woman who runs her motel as emergency housing is speaking out about how tough and dangerous the job can be.

It's costing $1 million a day for emergency and transitional housing prompting calls for much better oversight of some places described as risky and crime ridden.

There are no contracts between the Social Development Ministry and those supplying the rooms, nor specific obligations tagged to the millions being paid out.

Catherine, who only wanted to be identified by her first name says she goes above and beyond for her guests, driving them to the supermarket, taking them to court appearances or to the doctor.

She told political editor Jane Patterson she works hard to keep people safe.
