Minister condems emergency housing as 'inhumane'

From Morning Report, 7:13 am on 27 April 2021

One of the government's own ministers has condemned some emergency housing as "inhumane", while taking aim at moteliers - accusing them of turning a quick buck at the expense of safety and a decent place to live.

The Greens co-leader and Associate Housing Minister Marama Davidson says some people are living in "undignified situations" and the way money's handed out to motels and hotels - with no strings attached - is unacceptable.

People living with the consequences are telling RNZ about places rife with crime, intimidation and the ongoing victimisation of New Zealand's most vulnerable.

RNZ political editor Jane Patterson filed this report.
