The counting is almost complete and the result of Samoa's general election should be known within the next 36 hours.
Preliminary results left the election result hanging by a thread, with both major parties left holding 25 seats each in the 51 seat parliament.
The remaining seat looks set to be held by an independent, potentially giving him the balance of power.
The incumbent Human Rights Protection Party has been in power almost continuously for the last 40 years but they could make way to the opposition Faatuatua i Le Atua Samoa ua Tasi, or FAST, party.
