Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins says a ban on Indian arrivals was introduced because pre-departure testing has been ineffective.
The suspension will be in place for two weeks from Sunday.
India has passed 100,000 daily cases every day since Sunday 4 April, the only country to pass that mark along with the United States.
It reported 127,000 new Covid-19 cases yesterday.
