Covid-19: UK under-30s offered alternative to AstraZeneca

From Morning Report, 6:40 am on 9 April 2021

In the UK, under-30s will be offered an alternative to the AstraZeneca vaccine after it was found to be a possible cause for blood clots.

The recommendation comes after a UK review, which found 79 people had suffered rare blood clots after vaccination - and 19 died.

Meanwhile, the EU's medicines regulator says unusual blood clots should be listed as a possible very rare side effect of the AstraZeneca jab, but that the benefits outweighed the risks.

Some European countries have restricted the vaccine's use.
