Union launches action in employment court on courier contracts

From Morning Report, 7:23 am on 1 April 2021

From dawn to dusk, courier drivers provide a vital service to New Zealanders - but they're not always treated like it.

As contractors, most drivers miss out on receiving the minimum wage, redundancy and holiday pay.

A union has now lodged a group action in the Employment Court asking whether New Zealand Post courier drivers are self employed contractors or employees.

The declaration they are looking for concerns a group of couriers, with 15 signed up so far and 80 in talks over joining the action.

First Union spokesperson Jared Abbott spoke to Corin Dann.
