ACC change sees fewer birth tears covered

From Morning Report, 7:09 am on 31 March 2021

Women seriously injured while giving birth are being left without help they desperately need because ACC is taking a tougher approach.

The number of women covered for the most common type of birth injury - perineal tears - has fallen from 30 a month to less than 4, since the agency realised last year it was being more genrous than the law allowed.

The drop comes as the rate of birth injuries rises.

Investigative reporter Anusha Bradley has this report.
