MFAT approved military exports for United Arab Emirates, key partner for Saudi Arabia in Yemen conflict

From Morning Report, 7:09 am on 30 March 2021

RNZ can reveal the government approved the export of military hardware to the United Arab Emirates, a key partner in Saudi Arabia's military intervention in Yemen, in 2018 and 2019.

It included targeting systems for mortars, and suppressors - which reduce the recoil and noise from guns.

Experts say the information heightens concerns that New Zealand may have contributed to war crimes in Yemen.

It comes as the Foreign Ministry is reviewing its export controls regime to ensure it's fit for purpose.
