Napier locals hope housing package includes help for homeless

From Morning Report, 6:19 am on 23 March 2021

People in Napier are hoping the government's housing package which will be announced at 9 o'clock this morning will include measures that could help ease the city's homeless problem.

Napier has the highest social housing need in the country, with nearly seven-hundred-and-fifty households waiting for a home in the city.

Homeless people are among those on the social housing waitlist.

They congregate three times a week at an outreach centre, where they're given food and drink and are able to wash their clothes.

Hawke's Bay reporter Tom Kitchin spoke to one man living rough.

Every night, Rydell gets to choose where he sleeps - but it's not the choice many of us have.
