Some schools contracting their own bus services don't know it's up to them to monitor safety standards.
Two years ago Auckland company Kiwi Coaches was found to have been running a dozen school buses that weren't roadworthy, including having brakes that didn't work properly.
RNZ contacted the schools to tell them about the audit, this month, and all were surprised, but they shouldn't have been.
