A Canterbury regional councillor wants the Government to get on board with a radical proposal to provide free bus travel in greater Christchurch for two years.
Mid-Canterbury councillor John Sunckell says the experimental policy would aim to increase public transport use and reduce carbon emissions.
He estimates it could cost each ratepayer an extra $220 dollars a year but some of that could be covered by government funding.
