Auckland's Alert Level 3 has got off to a rocky start.
Hundreds of people spent up to six hours trying to get through the southern checkpoints home to Auckland last night. There were also reports of large gatherings in Auckland but so far there have been no arrests or warnings.
The move to Alert Level 3 for Auckland and Level 2 for the rest of the country came after two new cases were reported, a 21-year-old man and his mother.
It seems likely a single source of infection for the latest cluster but health officials are still worried because of number of places the young man, who should have been self-isolating, has visited.
Jacinda Ardern yesterday urged people to follow the rules.
