A self-taught builder turned architect who talked his way into architecture school is the newest winner of the highest honour for an individual architect in New Zealand.

Dave Strachan - who was nicknamed 'Four-by-two' at university - runs Strachan Group Architects.

He received the 2020 Gold Medal by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects on Thursday, joining celebrated architects like John Scott, Sir Ian Athfield and Roger Walker.
