Expert disappointed Davis hasn't taken on board judges findings

From Morning Report, 6:38 am on 25 February 2021

A legal expert says he is disappointed the Corrections Minister won't acknowledge a judge's finding that treatment of Auckland Women's Prison inmates was degrading, cruel and inhumane.

Manukau District Court Judge David McNaughton made the ruling when assessing whether Mihi Bassett should have her sentence extended for an arson at the prison in 2019.

Minister Kelvin Davis says he is not taking the judge's ruling at face value, wanting to first hear from Corrections.

Associate Professor of Law - and co-president of Te Hunga Roia Māori - Carwyn Jones told Māni Dunlop the Minister needs to rethink his stance.
