Cyanide-laced smelter waste stockpiled near Bluff beach

From Morning Report, 7:09 am on 22 February 2021

The aluminium smelter at Bluff has stockpiled more than 100,000 tonnes of cyanide-laced waste less than 100 metres from a fast-eroding Southland beach.

The smelter company won't reveal its plans for the hazardous waste though that stance flies in the face of international transparency guidelines it has signed up to.

The Government says it remains 'completely blind' about residual environmental contamination at Tiwai Point.
