The New Plymouth council has admitted it got it wrong, failing to fully promote the powerful Tai Moana Tai Tangata exhibition at its Govett Brewster Art Gallery and Len Lye Centre.
A gallery insider says the council appeared frightened of artist Brett Graham's commentary on the impact of colonialism on Māori and wanted to avoid controversy - which they say is at odds with the gallery's own mission statement.
