Aucklander from Myanmar speaks of spirited protests

From Morning Report, 7:29 am on 9 February 2021

Myanmar's military ruler, general Min Aung Hlaing has addressed the nation for the first time since the army seized power last week.

In a television address, General Hlaing sought to justify the coup saying civilian leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi, had failed to hold a proper election last November.

He said he had formed a government of "suitable ministers" and that they would work on creating job opportunities and reopening factories, as well as prioritising prevention of the Covid-19 virus.

He's promised fresh elections, but only once the commission overseeing the vote had been reformed.

It followed a third day of street protests.

Stanley Saw came to New Zealand in the 70s after an earlier coup, and has been in close contact with family and friends about what's happening in Myanmar.

He spoke to Susie Ferguson.
