Government's hands tied over Mataura dross removal - David Parker

From Morning Report, 7:51 am on 3 February 2021

The 8000 tonnes of toxic waste that has been stored in a disused factory in Mataura since 2014 should be gone from the town by the end of April.

Flooding and fire last year in the building where the waste was stored without permission, prompted the Environmental Defence Society to launch court action against New Zealand Aluminium Smelters.

On Tuesday it was announced that a deal has been reached to get rid of the toxic waste.

The Ministry for the Environment and the smelter company will split the estimated one million dollar clean-up bill.

Environment Minister David Parker told RNZ reporter, Timothy Brown, he would rather not have to pay for the clean up but the government's hands were tied in this instance.
