Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi detained in military coup

From Morning Report, 7:25 am on 2 February 2021

The Military in Myanmar have staged a coup, arresting the de-facto leader and senior officials just hours before parliament was set to begin.

The military declared a year-long state of emergency and internet and mobile phone systems were severely restricted.

The de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy party won by a landslide in November's election.

However, the military contested the results and now they have taken action.

Suu Kyi's party has urged her supporters to protest. Japan, India, the United States and the European Union are among countries who have condemned the coup.
