MTA boss says car safety compromised by government emissions goal

From Morning Report, 6:42 am on 29 January 2021

Prominent sectors of the transport industry are unhappy about a proposed new Clean Car Import Standard.

The Government has announced strict fuel economy limits aimed at helping New Zealand hit its goal to be carbon neutral by 2050.

It's promised a raft of transport targets.

Some in the transport industry say the goal to cut emissions to 105 grams of carbon dioxide emitted per kilometre by 2025 is unrealistic and will have negative consequences.

The Motor Industry Association, Motor Trade Association and the AA say the reduction isn't achievable and will make our roads more dangerous.

Chief executive of the Motor Trade Association is Craig Pomare.
