New Zealand sea shanty takes the world by storm

From Morning Report, 8:55 am on 25 January 2021

There's a certain trend this summer that's taking the world by storm - the humble sea shanty First it was a viral sensation on TikTok sung by a Scottish postman, Nathan Evans - he's now got a record deal.

Now a rendition by The Longest Johns has made it into the Official Top 40 Charts in Britain. Before all that, it was sung on ships in Dunedin where the famous whaling family The Wellers commanded the waters along New Zealand's south east coast.

We've found Edward Weller's great-great grandson and his name sake, Edward Ellison.

He's a kaumatua at Otakou marae.
