Covid-19: Northlanders holding their breath after case in community

From Morning Report, 7:09 am on 25 January 2021

Northlanders are holding their breath has they wait to find out if there is a community outbreak of Covid-19 in their region.

Testing stations are open today from Auckland to Kaitaia after a 56-year-old woman, who's tested positive for the virus after leaving managed isolation, visited about 30 locations across lower Northland down as far as Helensville.

Hundreds of people who may have come in contact with her are being told to stay home and get tested. The list of locations is on the Ministry's website.

The Northland woman returned to New Zealand from Europe just before the New Year.

It's not known how she caught it or what the strain is but health officials are working on the assumption it might be one of the more contagious strains of the virus - the UK or South African variant.

Hamish Cardwell filed this report.
