Police's illegal photos of young Māori prompt wider internal review

From Morning Report, 7:14 am on 20 January 2021

The police are launching a review into its policy of taking photos of young people after they found officers in Wairarapa took illegal photographs of rangatahi.

The practice came to light after enquiries from RNZ about reports of rangatahi having their photos taken by officers on the street in Masterton.

The police then found three photos, all of young Māori, contravened legislation and the pictures have since been destroyed.

Assistant Police Commissioner Scott Fraser told Māni Dunlop that police will now be doing their own internal review.
