Southlanders are expressing relief after a deal was reached to keep the Tiwai Point aluminum smelter open.
Mining conglomerate Rio Tinto announced last year it was closing Tiwai in August this year due to high energy and transmission costs.
It has now struck a deal with Meridian Energy to keep operating until the end of 2024.
