Watchdog calls for greater protection of Pukekura Park

From Morning Report, 8:56 am on 6 January 2021

A watchdog group says New Plymouth's Brooklands and Pukekura parks are paying a heavy price for their popularity and it's calling for boardwalks to protect ancient pukatea trees in the reserve.

The Friends of Pukekura Park say the roots of the swap-dwelling pukatea, which need to be aerated, are instead being trampled under the feet of the thousands of visitors to the park.

The areas affected include the famous concert venue, the Bowl of Brooklands.

RNZ's Taranaki Whanganui reporter Robin Martin has this report.
