Rioters protesting dire conditions - Waikeria Prison sources

From Morning Report, 8:09 am on 31 December 2020

Sources inside Waikeria Prison say the men who started a riot are protesting about terrible conditions and a poor Corrections strategy for Maori. Disorder started Tuesday, when fires were set in an exercise yard, causing massive damage across a high-security area. The Department of Corrections says 21 prisoners were involved. Four surrendered, but 17 are still refusing to co-operate. The Department of Corrections says it has "highly trained staff with specialist skills who are continuing to negotiate with the prisoners involved".
Its Chief Executive stated earlier, he would "not ... speculate on matters that are relevant to those negotiations. A review into the incident has been commissioned and the reasons for the prisoners' actions will be considered."
Reporter Tom Kitchin has the story.
