Covid-19: UK government puts London into Christmas lockdown

From Morning Report, 7:19 am on 21 December 2020

The United Kingdom's Christmas plans have been scuppered by a new, more infectious strain of Covid-19.

While most of Britain was already in some form of lockdown, the government had intended to temporarily relax restrictions over the holiday.

Instead, almost 18 million people are in strict lockdown in London and the south-east of England over Christmas.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson says people outside of that area will be allowed to meet on Christmas Day for a "short and small" celebration.
