Abuse victims voices coming loud and clear in Royal Commission

From Morning Report, 7:37 am on 17 December 2020

A lawyer representing hundreds of survivors of abuse in state care says their voices are coming through loud and clear in a Royal Commission of Inquiry.

The commission released its interim report yesterday, including estimates that up to a quarter of a million people were abused in care between 1950 and 2019.

Minister for the Public Service Chris Hipkins says it's one of the most sobering reports he's ever read and the hurt caused is inexcusable.

Sonja Cooper from Cooper Law says it's encouraging that those abused are at last being heard and she is hopeful the government will respond with positive change.

She speaks to Susie Ferguson.
