Helicopter crash reported in Hawke's Bay

From Morning Report, 7:15 am on 16 December 2020

Police and other emergency services are responding to reports of helicopter crash on the eastern side of the Mahia peninsula in Hawkes Bay.

The police say they were told of the crash by a member of the public at about 6:30am on Wednesday. Initial reports suggest the crash is off the Mahia East Coast Road.

St John rescuers say they have just arrived at the scene and a rescue helicopter is on its way. Flight Radar 24.com shows the rescue helicopter, which flew out of Hastings around 6:45am, is now at the site.

The rescue helicopter appears to be hovering above a valley. The terrain in the area is rugged with steep valleys and peaks above 400 metres.

It also briefly showed another helicopter in the air - from about 7.05am to 7.10am - leaving Mahia and then flying along the eastern coast of the Mahia peninsula at a relatively low altitude of 900 feet.

It is no longer visible on the site. Metservice says there are fine weather conditions in Mahia this morning, with light winds between 13 and 17 kilometres per hour.

Satellite imagery shows no clouds in the area.

Rocket Lab says its workers are not involved in the crash.
