Almost one in five trucks travelling between Northport and Auckland failed police safety inspections.
Senior Sergeant Mike Flatt says some of the most concerning faults found were around braking systems and worn tyres.
The police checks coincided with an abnormally large number of trucks moving freight by road after a large container ship bound for Auckland had to dock at Whangarei.
