The National Party wants to question Parliament's Speaker, before a select committee, over a costly legal dispute.
Labour has, however, already poured cold water over the plan - RNZ understands it intends to block any attempt by the Opposition to make Trevor Mallard appear.
The Speaker last week publicly apologised for comments he made in which he wrongly claimed an accused rapist was working on Parliament's premises.
A staffer was stood down and then launched defamation proceedings, which the National Party last week revealed to have cost the taxpayer more than $300,000.
National has declared it has lost confidence in the Speaker and wants to question him at the Governance and Administration Select Committee this week.
The plan has the backing of ACT but is unlikely to go ahead as Labour has indicated it will prevent Mallard from appearing.
