Work has finally started to restore an old wharf at Tokomaru Bay in Tairāwhiti on the East Coast.
Locals have been working for years to raise money for the rebuild which they hope will reinvigorate the town.
Funding for the project is still a hurdle though, as Country Life's Sally Round reports.
