The United States has recorded more than 3000 Covid-19 deaths in a single day.
That is more than were killed in the 9/11 terror attacks and the highest 24-hour total anywhere in the world since the pandemic began.
A record number of people have been hospitalised and intensive care units are fast running out of beds.
