New Zealand's thirteen-year-olds have recorded record low scores in a global test of maths and science.
The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study tested half a million children in 64 countries last year.
Our nine-year-olds had slightly lower scores than last time the test ran in 2015, but the older children's scores fell significantly.
The education ministry's chief scientific advisor, Stuart McNaughton from Auckland University, told RNZ education correspondent John Gerritsen he was surprised by the size of the drop for 13-year-olds.
