An American scientist who warned against tourists going onto Whakaari/White Island years before it exploded is hesistant about allowing people to go back.

In 2012, Erik Klemetti - an associate professor of geosciences at Denison University in Ohio - wrote an article for the US magazine Discover titled, 'How dangerous is visiting New Zealand's White Island?'.

In it, he warned that even a small steam-driven eruption could have catastrophic consequences if a tour group was there at the time.

Reporter Sarah Robson spoke to him in the lead up to the first anniversary of the deadly 9 December eruption, and began by asking him whether he was surprised tourists were allowed there in the first place.
