State surveillance systems too powerful - Researcher

Facial recognition infrastructure is now in place that could enable for mass surveillance of New Zealanders and a Wellington researcher is warning state surveillance systems have become too powerful and lack controls.

A major study out today says facial recognition technology must be regulated more, especially use of it by police.

Associate Law Professor Nessa Lynch of Victoria University who led the research, says the public can't yet have confidence the tech's use is fair and lawful.
