Violence erupted on the streets Paris over the weekend while there were demonstrations in other French cities as tens of thousands protested an incident of police brutality.

Demonstrators were venting anger at the passing of a bill that would make it a criminal offence to film or photograph police for malicious reasons.

Opponents say the bill undermines press freedom, with the heated protests resulting in damage to some cars and properties in the French capital.

Police responded by firing tear gas and making nearly fifty arrests.

Earlier this week, footage emerged of three white policemen racially abusing and beating black music producer Michel Zecler - the incident sparking nationwide condemnation, including from president Emmanuel Macron.
