Momentum may be building for four year terms - Andrew Geddis

An election law expert says momentum could be building to increase the parliamentary term to four years.

A Research New Zealand survey of 1000 people shows just over 60 percent support the idea, while about 25 percent are opposed.

The rest were undecided.

The Labour and National Party leaders both agreed change was a good idea when it was floated during a recent election debate.

Otago University Law Professor Andrew Geddis says the survey suggests there has been a large swing in opinion since the idea was roundly rejected in two previous referenda.
