International law expert on China, Five Eyes stoush

The Chinese government has responded aggressively to criticism by Five Eyes that it is trying to silence political opposition in Hong Kong.

The intelligence grouping of countries which includes New Zealand has objected to new rules allowing elected representatives to be sacked from the Hong Kong legislature.

China's foreign ministry spokesperson, Zhao Lijian, has gone on record as saying: "It doesn't matter whether they have five eyes or 10; if they dare to damage China's sovereignty, security and development, they should be careful or their eyes will be plucked out".
