Late plans to widen and extend the motorway where Transmission Gully merges with State Highway 1 have been labelled a band-aid solution.
The Transport Agency will shortly call for tenders to build an additional 650 metre merge lane extension at Linden heading south, towards Wellington.
Some question if it will work and if it can be built in time.
The billion dollar road is due to open in September next year.
