Dioxin alert issued months after potentially dangerous fire began

Pregnant and breastfeeding women have been asked to leave an area where an out-of-control fire has been burning for months.

The fire, at a landfill site in Pukemiro west of Huntly, has been burning since August.

A preliminary health assessment, ordered last week, says the recommendation is being made as a precautionary measure because the fire could be releasing dioxins into the air.

Corin Dann asked Waikato DHB's Medical Officer of Health, Doctor Richard Hall, why it's taken so long for the advice to be released.
