Waikato grandmother fearful after fire at dump leads to dioxin alert

From Morning Report, 7:45 am on 17 November 2020

A dioxin alert has put a Waikato grandmother off having her grandchildren or pregnant daughter-in-law over to visit.

Authorities have advised pregnant and breastfeeding women to temporarily shift away from an underground fire burning at a landfill near Pukemiro and Glen Afton.

The Waikato Regional Council says it's a precaution based on a preliminary health assessment, while it waits for specialist equipment to arrive to do testing.

Dump owner John Campbell refused to talk about the dioxin alert to RNZ - last week he ridiculed locals' health fears Jeanne Ree of Pukemiro got the dioxin notice at the weekend.
