Fewer people than expected applied for Covid-19 benefit

Far fewer people have applied for a special Covid-19 unemployment benefit than first forecast.

The 12-week payment began in June, and covers people made redundant between March and October because of the pandemic.

The number of people who've applied for the Covid-19 income relief payment close at midnight tonight.

Back in April, a report to cabinet said more than 300,000 people could end up being eligible for it - just 38,000 grants have been approved.

Social issues reporter Sarah Robson asked the Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni why that's happened.
