In a major milestone in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, an experimental Covid-19 vaccine is reported to be more than 90 percent effective.

The developers - the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer and the German manufacturer BioNTech - described it as a "great day for science and humanity".

Their vaccine has been tested on more than 43,000 people in six countries and no safety concerns have been raised.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is one of dozens in development around the world.

Applications are being made for emergency approval, to make it available before the end of the year.

Last month, the New Zealand government announced it had reached a deal with Pfizer and BioNTech for 1.5 million doses of a Covid-19 vaccine, that's enough for 750,000 people.
