Election day finally arrives in the United States

From Morning Report, 7:09 am on 4 November 2020

It's election day in the United States.

In a matter of hours results will begin rolling in for Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

It has been a campaign marred by a pandemic, protests and police killings in what is being called the most important election in decades.

Already voters are queuing at polling booths across the country and it's set to be the highest voter turn out in a century. But there are fears that whatever the result, the response will be a violent one.

Police in key swing states have been preparing for clashes. In Washington DC the Empire State Building and prominent shop fronts have been boarded up for safety and the White House has been fenced in.

This is far from business as usual on election day.
