Targeted programmes needed for kids with poor language skills

Almost two of every three new entrants in some low-decile primary schools in Christchurch have poor language skills with some speaking like toddlers.

Household stress, too much screen time, and a lack of interaction by busy parents are being blamed.

Dr Jannie van Hees from Auckland University told RNZ reporter Ruth Hill these children will struggle at school without targeted programmes to get them talking.
