Should the Greens work with Labour in government?

Labour and the Greens are meeting again today to thrash out areas they can cooperate on in government.

With Labour holding an election night majority the Greens aren't needed in a formal coalition arrangement.

Labour and the Greens met twice last week in the Prime Minister's office and will do so again later today. Jacinda Ardern expects to complete talks this week.

But what do minor parties get out of coalition deals and does signing up to them signal a slide into political irrelevancy?

Dame Tariana Turia is a former Labour Party MP who left to form the Maori Party and Keith Locke is a former Green Party MP.
