National's caucus will today begin the task of trying to pick up the pieces, as it first meeting following the weekend's crushing defeat.
The 21 MPs who have lost their seats, been too low on the list to return given the party's poor showing, or who decided to retire at this election will attend the start of the meeting to say their farewells.
The remaining MPs will then turn their minds to the daunting task of rebuilding for the next election.
