There's hope the number of New Zealand teachers returning from overseas could plug a long-running teacher shortage.

New data detailing the occupations of New Zealanders coming home shows teachers are leading the country's brain gain, followed by engineering professionals.

Stats NZ collated the arrival card information in the five months from April, which also shows almost 100 more labourers than chief executives returned.

High school science teacher Simon Grimmer is coming home with his family later this year, after 13 years working abroad.

Talking from his home in northern Thailand, he told RNZ reporter Amy Williams the decision to return was not made lightly.
